RANGES OF ORAL READING RATES OF STUDENTS READING AT INSTRUCTIONAL LEVEL
 

First Grade: 31 - 87 wpm

Second Grade: 52 - 102 wpm

Third Grade: 78 - 124 wpm

Fourth Grade: 85 - 139 wpm

Fifth Grade: 98 - 153 wpm

Sixth Grade: 113 - 165 wpm

These ranges are the number of words a minute your child should be able to read successfully or without assistance. If your child is reading below their grade level range, then the material being read is too difficult for them. To promote a love of reading, choose books that your child can read fluently or without assistance.
